Generation No. 33. JAMES ANTHONY3 CAIN (WILLIAM F.2, DAVID A.1) was born 07 Apr 1845 in Orneville, Piscatqui Co., Maine, and died 26 May 1940 in Adams County, Wisconsin. He married MARY ELIZABETH DURKEE 09 Apr 1876 in Schofield, Marathon Co., WI, daughter of STEPHEN DURKEE and LYDIA ALEXANDER. She was born 09 Aug 1860 in Mosinee, Marathon Co., WI, and died 13 Sep 1928 in Plainfield, Waushara Co., WI. Notes for JAMES ANTHONY CAIN: Handwritten notes by Ruth Zwetz Holcomb 1910-1964, (daughter of Jennie E. Cain Zwetz) as she was told: " James Cain, Born April 7, 1846 in Orville, Maine. The son of William F and Lucy S. Cain. Nationality-Irish family ancestors had come from Belfast, Ireland to anti-Irish community. Later founded Belfast, Maine. Moved to Wisconsin in 1854 and settled on a farm, Town of St. Lawrence, Waupaca County, Wisconsin about two miles from Ogdensburg.(1) School - went to a private home. Taught by a neighbor lady. She had no teachers certificate. Next year United District built school house.(2) First teacher was Elsie Clark who received $2 a week and "boarded round" with the families. Second year his mother died leaving six children. (3) He stayed on the farm until he was 20 years old. (4) He worked in Wisconsin Pinery until he was 30 years old. Married 9 April 1876 to Mary Elizabeth Durkee (5) of Schofield, WI. The minister was Jessie Cole, Methodist. Their first home adjoined the Homestead in St. Lawrence. They left there in 1898 and first settled in Hancock, Waushara County, WI. After a year, moved to Town of Leola, Adams County, WI., where he spent the rest of his life. He was a Justice of The Peace from 1902 to 1912-14. He joined the Congregational Church in 1909. He had nine children. Recollections-usual hard times. Many playmates were Indians. They were nice playmates. After they got acquainted, older Indians were friendly too. The children played with bow and arrows and the same games as all children. In 1862 there was some excitement when some Indians got some whiskey." Comments: (1) I have found the location on the St. Lawrence 1899 Plat Map. It includes the Schoolhouse and 133 acres to the north of the road belong to Augustus M. Cain, with James having 80 acres immediately to the east of Augustus. (2) This should be the "Old Block School House". It is located about a mile and a half southeast from the Post Office. I found an old list of cemeteries in the Waupaca Courthouse. In it is listed the "Block/Cain" cemetery, next to the "Old Block School House". Photo here I went and found its location and stood in the cemetery. Unfortunately, most of the headstones have been vandalized or worn smooth. The school house is being refurbished by someone. The 1899 Plot map for St. Lawrence Township refers to the cemetery as the "Union Cemetery". (3) Places time of death for Lucy as 1856. (4) I take this to mean he moved away for 10 years until he got married. (5) The Durkee connection. John Byron Cain's mother should be Nellie Durkee based on other birth certificates I have found in Waupaca Co. Courthouse. John, on his Social Security Application, dated 1940, states his father as Augustus Cain and Nellie Bruel. I believe that Nellie remarried after Augustus disappeared. I have found a birth certificate (#87) listing an un-named white female born to Augustus Cain (born in Maine) and Nellie Durkee (born in Vermont) 12 Oct 1894. On this entry into the ledger is listed "other living issue". George, Earl, JOHN, Lewis, Minnie, Adalie (?spelling) and Roy. Proven so many times over of marriages of brothers/sisters into another family, I suspect that Nellie Durkee might be related to Mary E. Durkee. The Society of Genealogy of Durkees, at this time can not tie Nellie into their database, but Mary Elizabeth is. 4. AUGUSTUS M.3 CAIN (WILLIAM F.2, DAVID A.1) was born Jun 1850 in Maine, and died Unknown. He married NELLIE J. DURKEE Abt. 1877, daughter of N.N. and N.N.. She was born Jun 1859 in Vermont, and died Unknown. Notes for AUGUSTUS M. CAIN: Augustus disappeared when John B was in his early teens. He went to town with a pocket full of money and was never heard from again. Family lore says everything from robbers to itchy feet. I have not been able to find any trace of him post 1905. Notes for NELLIE J. DURKEE: parents born in Vermont according to census records. I believe that Nellie is not her true given Christian name. Only time will tell what it really is. In earlier census listings, her age is incorrect. The 1900 Adams Co, WI Census shows her 10 years younger than Augustus, which I believe to be correct. Also listed is length of marriage as 23 years in 1900, hence the estimated marriage year.
