Generation No. 2

2. WILLIAM F.2 CAIN (DAVID A.1) was born 29 Oct 1818 in Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine, and died 15 Mar 1897 in Ogdensburg, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. He married LUCY S. FARNHAM. She was born 14 Jul 1822 in Castine, Hancock County, Maine, and died Abt. 1858 in Ogdensburg, Waupaca County, Wisconsin.

Notes for WILLIAM F. CAIN:

Have copies of 1860, 1870, and 1880 Census from Ogdensburg, Waupaca, Wisconsin for William F. Cain Family.

But some small discrepancies have surfaced. I always take the Census with a "grain of salt". As we all know about the general accuracy involved back then.

In the 1860 Census, small errors are there. First, the surname is listed as "Kane" and Augustus is listed as a female! Where in the 1870 Census as a male.

Children specifically listed in the 1860 Census are: William A, James A, George A, Augusta M, Anna J, and Mary P. Second, the adjourning farm is listed as unoccupied, see the notes for Mary Cain next, specifically her residence in 1870..

In the 1860 Census there is listed a Mary Cain age 63 in Williams household, but not identified as to relationship. She is listed in the 1870 Census, age 73, as living on the next farm, with no one else listed as residents. And finally in the 1880 Census, she is listed in James A Cain's household as mother, at age 83. I have since found Mary's death registration, showing additional information to show her as Williams mother.

Based on Ruth Zwetz's notes and Williams obit, which states in 1897 "that his wife died 39 years prior", we can somewhat accurately place Lucy's death about 1858. But here comes the clunker, children are being shown in latter census's as recently being born, AFTER Lucy's estimated death date. Specifically, Willis F., age 8 in the 1870 Census, Prudelia age 14 in the 1870 Census. First guess would be that their first names were listed incorrectly. Or they are cousins, etc. living in the household. See notes below for Saloma Cain.

Because of the number of women named Mary, some of them might have changed their given names. I have several other Mary Cains not attached that are in the individual treemap. I have recorded them and hopefully I can tie them in.

The 1870 Census. On this sheet is listed a "Saloma", age 22 White Female. Occupation is listed as "Keeping house" Now comes the second surprise, on William's daughter Lucy's marriage registration I found, dated 16 June 1885, mother of wife before marriage is listed as: Saloma Cain! She is also listed as a witness. Until I can verify this with a secondary piece of documentation I am not attaching Saloma as a second spouse. She may be a relative ( related to Willis and Prudelia) who is helping to raise the children or other speculation.

The children listed in the 1870 census are: James A, Augustus M, Anna J, Prudelia (spelling?) age 14, Willis F, and Lucy.

Williams farm land was valued at $1000 and his personal estate at $2000.

William does not appear in any further Census that I can find. His Obit shows the same home from 1855 to 1897, so why he is not listed later on is unknown. James and Augustus appear as head of households on the same land in subsequent US Census's.

William F. Cain Obit. Waupaca Newpaper dated Thursday, March 18, 1897:

William Cain, one of the oldest residents of Waupaca county, passed away at his home in the town of St. Lawrence, east of Ogdensburg on Monday night, March 15, aged about 80 years. He was a native of Maine, coming west in 1854, and settling upon the farm where he has lived ever since. His was the second house built on the road between Ogdensburg and Royalton. He leaves four sons to mourn his demise, his wife having died thirty-nine years ago. They are W.H. and Frank(1) of Rhinelander and James and A.M. of Ogdensburg.

The funeral was held at the house at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. Moore conducting the services, and a large number of friends being present. The interment was at the Union Cemetery, St. Lawrence.

(1) I believe Willis F Cain, started using the first name of Frank.

Extract from the "Commerative Biographical Record of Upper Wisconsin", J. H. Beers, published 1895, page 140. This extract is from the chapter containing the biography of Henry A. Rich of Bucksport, Hancock County, Maine.

"The only inhabitants in that town when Mr. and Mrs. Rich arrived (*fall of 1855) were: Judge Ogden and Dreutzer, Simeon Hopkins, Marshall Levitt, William Shambeau, Henry W. Eldredge, Smith L Wait, WILLIAM CAIN, Hiram Collier, Smith Collier, Henry Carrick, Levi Carrick and Peter Sheperd."

Interesting coincidence, in the Township to the North of St. Lawrence [Helvetia, formed in 1861] three CAINS, Flan, Michael, and Bartley filed Land Patents in 1858. I know of no connection to these particular Cains. List it for future reference and research.
