According to Laura Keller, daughter of Laura Emelie Thede, Henry Thede drank a lot.  He was a farmer, but never owned any land.  He rented sections of land and raised wheat in North Dakota. 

There were no trees in North Dakota, so the farmers planted trees by their homes for windbreaks.  During snow storms the wind would howl through the trees, making it sound like an approaching train.  Then the people put lights in their windows so that in case a traveler came along he could find his way to their home to spend the night.

Mathilda (Tillie) was very much in love (and he with her) with someone else, but her father wouldn't allow them to marry even though her lover would have given up his Catholic religion for her.  She later married Paul Meyer, who became an alcoholic.  They lived in Plymouth for several years, then in Chilton when she became sick with TB from which she never recovered.  She died at Rocky Knoll Sanitarium, Plymouth, Wisconsin.  She had asked her sister, Emelie Schmeiser, to take care of her two boys, so they were brought up with the Charles Schmeiser family.
